(b) The runway length required for landing at sea level in standard atmospheric conditions is 3km. Runway length required for take-off at sea level in standard atmospheric condition is 2.5 km. Aerodrome reference temperature is 25 degree centigrade and that of the standard atmosphere at aerodrome elevation of 150 m is 14.025 degree centigrade. If the effective runway gradient is 0.5 percent, determine the runway length to be provided. (8 Marks)
5 (a) Define the term gate capacity. Explain the factors on which the gate occupancy time depends. (8 Marks)
(b) Discuss the principles of design of runway intersection area. Draw a typical sketch showing the gradation of the intersection area. (12 Marks).
6 (a) Explain in detail the various factors which affect the layout of taxiway. (8 Marks)

(c) Determine the radius of a taxiway for a supersonic transport whose wheel base is 35 m and the tread of main landing gear is 7.2m. The design turning speed is 60 kmph. Assume any other data, if required. (6 Marks)
7 (a) What is ESWL? How can it be determined for dual and dual-in-tendem wheel assembly? (6 Marks)
(b)  Name and discuss in brief the various methods used for designing flexible airport pavements. (10 Marks)
(c) An existing runway and taxiway consists of 15 cm of cement concrete slab resting on subgrade. The subgrade soil is grouped as Rb type. It is necessary to strengthen the pavement for supporting ESWL of 26300 kg. Determine an overlay thickness of bituminous concrete. (4 Marks)
8 (a) What are the broad principles kept in view for the convenience of passengers and baggage flow in terminal area. (4 Marks)
(b) Explain the necessity of airport lighting. (4 Marks)
(c) Enumerate the various criterias for designing the filter material for sub surface drainage. (6 Marks)
(d) Discuss in brief the various aspects of environmental management and monitoring programme needed after the airport is in operation. (6 Marks).
